  • School Festival

Our School Orchestra performed Brahms' Hungarian Dance and B Rossette.

It felt so good to perform a piece we worked hard on in front of the whole school.

Beethoven Sonata No. 30 Mvt II

One of my favorite pianists, Glenn Gould adored this piece.

There my thoughts about the piece under the video description. : )

I'm so proud of this performance, receiving acclaim from the great Mikhail Pletnev.

    Scarlatti Keyboard Sonata Kk. 9

I think this piece is an example of my "touch"

and a very good example of my unorthodox-ness (uniqueness) of my interpretations.

Mozart Sonata KV. 545 "Sonata Facile"

This is a performance from when I started getting the idea of "interpretation"

Now that I listen to it, it has countless flaws, but I believe this is a important performance in my pianistic career.

I'm a much better pianist now, believe me haha

    Memories

    ADIEU 2023!

    (2023/12/31)

On the last day of 2023, I went to Lotte Concert Hall to

    listen to Myung-Whun Chung's Beethoven 9th Symphony.

It was an amazing performance, I got chills through the whole thing.

His tempo became a bit slower than before, adding more nuances.

I like the performance better than the 2013 recording.

New York Steinway & Sons Showroom

    (2023/12/11)

While in New York, I visited the Steinway Showroom.

I tried out some of the pianos there, and asked the staff a few questions.

She asked me if I wanted to see more, and she took us to the basement. There I saw the world's most expensive piano, based on Mussorgsky's "Pictures on an Exhibition"

The lamp in the last photo is based on Bach's Goldberg Variations, which is a piece I enjoy playing

    A Letter from The Musician

    (2023/09/21)

I got a letter response from the great polyphonist, Mikhail Pletnev.

He also included an email so I can talk to him anytime.

I really appreciate his humility for paying attention to just an amateur pianist like me.

    Mikhail Pletnev's Piano Recital

    (2023/09/10)

Today I visited Seoul Arts Center to listen to my favorite pianist, Mikhail Pletnev perform.

I believe he is the epitome of a great musician.

The Chopin program, his light touch made them into completely different, spellbinding pieces.

I waited after the concert for two hours just to give him the letter.

    It was worth the wait.

We had a short conversation- He asked me if I was a pianist.

I couldn't say that I was in his presence, so I told just told him I'm an amateur.

    Rudolf Buchbinder's Beethoven Sonatas

    (2023/07/08)

After the school exam ended, I went to Rudolf Buchbinder's piano recital with a friend.

His interpretation of Beethoven was really deep and thoughtful,

as he was a beethoven specialist.

I heard that he's coming to Korea next year for the Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle.

    Piano Competition

    (2023/06/24)

I participated in a piano competition: during a basketball tournament and the exam week.

It was a hard time, but all ended well.

The second photo is with my piano teacher, where all my pianism came from.

(I tried to smile but I was nervous in the photo with my teacher)

    Bruce Liu Piano Recital

    (2023/03/04)

The day before the new semester, I went to the SAC with my best friend.

Bruce Liu is the winner of the most recent Chopin Piano Competition.

In my (humble) opinion, I honestly think he is a more colorful pianist than Cho.

His light touch was amazing- through the program and the 7 encores.

But his Liszt was somewhat too light and clean.

It was still a great performance. (His autograph is very cool too)

    My First Henle Sheet Music

All the greats have one, all the wannabes have one.

(that is not a Steinway (I think Kawai pianos are better than Steinways))

The pianist's bible (The Beethoven Sonatas) in blue.

    Daniil Trifonov Piano Recital

    (2023/02/18)

I guess Tchaikovsky piano competition winners are the greats- Pletnev, Sokolov, Trifonov.

Trifonov is a very unique pianist, just like the other two.

His performance of Gaspard de la Nuit was absolutetly breathtaking,

I was so immersed I forgot listening to it.

    SPO, Albrecht, Frederic-Guy

    (2022/11/17)

The programme was Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, and

    Brahms/Schoenberg Piano Quartet No.1

I went with my best friend, Seungyoon,

The Concerto was beautiful, but Lotte Concert Hall isn't the best for piano performances.

However, the transcription was amazing. It was the first time I heard the piece.

Also, before the performance, the audience were told to not clap after playing Pavane pour une infante défunte, as in sending condolence to the Itaewon Incident.

Nobody clapped, or couged. The 2000 seat hall was completely quiet.

    "Fall in Rachmaninoff"

    (2022.10.18)

Everybody loves Rach. (Am I right? no? okay...)

    Especially his piano concertos.

There were two pianists, Chunhee Kim and Iliya Rashkovskiy.

    Rashkovskiy played the second concerto.

To be honest, it was absolutely monotonous.

Rach 2 was Rachmaninoff's epic comeback piece after his failure of his first symphony.

The pianist should start off with large chords, and then become an accompanist

during the first theme, and THEN in the third movment make the comeback.

    There was none of that.

Rhapsody in a theme of Paganini and Rach 3 was amazing, played by Chunhee Kim.

    Otto Klemperer

    (2022.10.06)

I discover Otto Klemperer, shocked by his exceptional recording of Beethoven's 9th.

Since then, he is in my opinion, the greatest man to hold the baton.

    Dang Thai Son Piano Recital

    (2022.08.21)

Often regarded as the greatest living piano teacher- one of his students is Bruce Liu.

Son won the Chopin Piano Competition in 1980, with controversy with Ivo Pogorelich.

Pogorelich is also a pianist I respect very much.

Son's thoughtful performance of Chopin was great.

    Buzz...

    (2022.04.08)

I find where the buzzing sound coming from my piano, that bothered me for over an year

    had been coming from.

If the Winners' Choice is to have a loud piece of paper inside the piano,

I'm ready to put it back in.

    Lang Lang Piano Recital

    (2022/02/24)

    The programme was Goldberg Variations.

I used to enjoy listening to Lang Lang,

    but his Bach was underwhelming.

    2021 Chopin Competition

    (2021 November)

I watched the Chopin Competition live.

Many of the performance where at late night, so I had to stay up late.

    It was worth it.

    Bruce Liu won the competition.
